The tragic murder of Ms. Yvonne Mitchell Mafuta, a renowned hairdresser from Mutare, has left a profound mark on the community. However, a significant step towards justice was achieved with the arrest of the prime suspect, Thulani Mhlanga, aged 40, by the Mutare Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the evening of November 15.

This development has brought some measure of relief to the grieving community, with Honorable Getrude Mutandi, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, expressing gratitude to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for their exemplary work. “The professionalism and dedication demonstrated by the Mutare CID team are commendable. Their swift action has reassured the nation that justice will be served,” Hon. Mutandi remarked.

Speaking on the case, Hon. Mutandi revealed the harrowing details uncovered during her engagement with the suspect. “It was disheartening to hear the suspect admit to his calculated actions with such a lack of remorse. This underscores the urgent need for communities to remain vigilant and cautious in their interactions with others,” she added.

Ms. Mafuta’s brutal murder has shaken many, serving as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women and the importance of prioritizing safety. Hon. Mutandi emphasized the need for women to take precautionary measures, such as keeping trusted individuals informed of their movements and being wary of strangers.

She further urged citizens to stand united against criminal activities, noting, “This incident serves as a somber warning: crime does not pay. The arrest of Thulani Mhlanga demonstrates the effectiveness of collective action and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to protect our communities.”

While the arrest offers some comfort, Hon. Mutandi acknowledged the irreplaceable loss suffered by Ms. Mafuta’s family and the community at large. “Justice has prevailed, but losing a life is something we cannot take lightly. Let us honor her memory by working together to create safer communities for all,” she concluded.

As the community mourns the untimely death of Ms. Mafuta, let this tragedy inspire stronger efforts to prevent such senseless acts in the future.
