SOME prefects at Sanyati High School are in the eye of a storm for allegedly taking the law into their hands and repeatedly assaulting students.
One of the students, who was viciously attacked by a prefect after a row between them on September 23, has even been recommended by counsellors to change schools as the attack badly affected him.
The headmaster of the school, Pearson Wasarirevhu, referred the newspaper to seek comment from district education officers in Kadoma.
A Probation Officer, Carina Matiyashe, in her report, noted that the student suffered physical injuries such as bruises and now feels betrayed and has lost trust in the school authorities.
He is a Form Two student.
It appears many Form Two students have been turned into punching bags in the wake of the row between their fellow student and one of the prefects.
Matiyashe noted that the child now becomes anxious or stressed whenever it is time to attend classes or interact with prefects.
His academic performance could also suffer, due to emotional distress, noted Matiyashe.
She recommended that the child should get counselling and probably needs a change of environment.
Matiyashe said a different location could help free the child from the demons which were now stalking him.
Another Probation Officer, J Nyayanhu, who interviewed and counselled the prefect in the eye of the storm, said:
“His defiant behaviour may be ascribed to negative norms within the prefects’ board as well as abuse of authority given to him as a prefect.”
A parent, who spoke to H-Metro on condition of anonymity, told H-Metro:
“The victims were called for a meeting and the authorities wanted to silence them by saying they would be made prefects the following year if they kept quiet.”
Another parent said:
“That is something that has always been there.”
