Oscar Pambuka sentenced to 6 years in jail over US$12,000 fraud case

Former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) news anchor Oscar Pambuka has been sentenced to six years in jail for fraud involving US$12 650. In 2018, Pambuka and former Zanu PF Highfield MP Psychology Maziwisa were convicted on charges of defrauding the Zimbabwe Power Company of US$12 650 and each sentenced to six years and five months in prison. The rest of the term was suspended and they were supposed to serve 30 months. However the two were not happy with the decision and decided to appeal to the High Court against both conviction and sentence. When the matter was struck off the roll in September last year, the two were supposed to hand themselves over to jail but did not. THE State yesterday withdrew fraud charges before plea against incarcerated comedienne Felistas Murata, popularly known as Mai TT, after establishing that she had paid back the complainant’s money amounting to US$10 000. The matter was withdrawn before Harare magistrate Ms Appollonia Marutya. It was the State’s case that sometime in September 2022, at corner Second Street and Speke Avenue in Harare, Murata unlawfully and intentionally misrepresented to the complainant Rachel Mhuka that she was in need of US$10 000 for her business venture and would give Mhuka her Mercedes Benz vehicle, registration number AFF9759, as surety for the loan which she undertook to pay back by November 30 last year. Zimbabwean urban grooves singer Enock Guni, 39, known as Nox, spent the weekend in jail after being arrested for alleged credit card fraud by police in Dublin, Ireland and had his scheduled show at the Button Factory on Friday cancelled. According to a report by The Irish Sun newspaper, Nox was staying at the Hard Rock Hotel in Temple Bar and when it came to paying the €787 (US$861) bill, including room service, he “paid with a shocked American woman’s credit card number.” “Instead of getting on stage, Nox was arrested for deception, interviewed and held in Garda (police) custody until he appeared before Judge John Hughes at a weekend sitting of Dublin District Court,” The Irish Sun newspaper reported.
