Popular musicians ExQ and Tocky Vibes had a nasty fallout which resulted in the song “Wakatemba” being taken down by video streaming platform Youtube. The hit song which is normally credited as ExQ featuring Tocky Vibes was a collaboration between the two musicians. According to online publication zimeyenews the two musicians collaborated on “Wakatemba,” which was ExQ’s song, after a gentleman’s agreement that they would work together on a Tocky Vibes song shortly.
Tocky’s camp alleges that ExQ did not live up to his word and welched on the gentleman’s agreement that the two parties had made. Following multiple failed attempts to convince ExQ and his camp to honour the agreement, Tocky Vibes and his camp hit back hard.
The musician filed a copyright claim with Youtube, which resulted in the giant streaming platform taking down both the official video and the official audio of “Wakatemba.” The song was originally on ExQ’s channel.
Since this is a case of disputed copyright, it is not clear when or if Youtube will resolve the matter and allow the song back on its platform. Ever since the song was pulled down a few days back, unscrupulous individuals have moved to take advantage of the situation by uploading the video on their own channels.
According to TechZim, once ExQ and Tocky Vibes resolve their copyright dispute, one of them will be able to have the offending videos removed. However, if the two remain at loggerheads, they may be unable to invoke their rights.
YouTube does have a way to thwart this using their technology called Content ID. The copyright owner uses the tool to register their work, YouTube then creates an ID of the registered work in it’s database. It then trawls through YouTube looking for duplicates. It takes time for this to happen but eventual when a duplicate is discovered the copyright owner can just choose to monetise the video themself instead of having it taken down…This is a case of disputed copyright. Which probably means it might not be possible for either ExQ or Tocky Vibes to use Content ID which will mean the pirates having a field day.
